The Afghan Hound, unlike the majority of breeds, has a great variety of color and all of them are allowed in their standard.

MASKS. -

The same concept indicates to us that it is a different color, beginning from the mouth and extending sometimes, almost by all the head. In the majority of Afghan, the mask is of black color and less usual, they are those afghans presents/displays that it of blue color.  All the afghans haven´t mask and it is because in the afghan genetics   there is a gene that is the one that contributes the mask. This gene is dominant, meaning that 2 parents with mask, also have descendants with mask. 

COLORS. -  Exists an wonderful fan of colors for this not less wonderful breed, than is of great interest for which we´re falled in love of it. Unfortunately there is few studies of quantitative genetics, that is to say the one that indicate the dominance and recesividad to us of the carrying genes of the color. We can affirm that 3 primary colors exist and dominant and by dominance order, they are the black, red and the black-tan. The other colors are been from combinations and shades of these three.

BLACK:  It is the most dominant color and usually he has target in the chest and/or feet. It has dark pigmentation and although it can or not to have mask, this one is not to us perceivable; for that reason we will have to study its ancestors.                                                                                                          

 The black Afghans come from the crossing with giant black poudles that were made in the Thirties to improve the amount of coat.
Some Afghan black present/display a reddish color and it is by exhibitions to the sun very prolonged, although it totally is allowed in the standard, is not aesthetically pleasant. Many products solve that it, like with our hair exist. The sun in excess is very injurious for all.
RED: it is the color by antonomasia of the Afghan and is appreciated in his country of origin. This color can appear from a tonality red mahogany to the palest one throwing to cream. Years ago this color was registered making mention to its tonality like, gilded, fawn, apricot… but at the moment, he is simply Red.               

   BLACK &TAN: Many are the people who think that she is the most elegant color. He is black with marks sea breams in each eye, interior of feet and legs with some in the others zones and the base of the tail, although sometimes until the part of back of the tail. Those that have not mask, have more tan by all their face.
CREAM: It is a non dominant color, so, It is recessive color, consequently there are puppies from cream color when the 2 parents are creams and when they are not it but they carry the recessive gene both. The chair and the ears usually are of a darker color. The pigmentation is black and dark eyes. Sometimes, the Afghan cream presents/displays a color pigmentation liver, but this one is not desirable.  A Afghan dark cream has the possibility of producing blue puppies, this is because genetically they are blue, since a true cream cannot because it is a recessive color. This Afghan dark cream comes from a Afghan diluted black to blue and from another Afghan color diluted cream; that is to say, the Afghan dark cream receives a double dose of dilution.
 BLUE OR GRAY: They continue being Afghan black. It happens that usually they have a dilution of the recessive gene, incomplete or a dilution of the gene that is in charge to produce some pale hairs of gray color or. Really, it is a diluted black.
The pigmentation has to be dark, just as its eyes. This color tambiés appears in diverse tonalities and uniformity by all the body. Happening of blue the so dark that it seems us black (blue slate) to a so face tonality, that shining silver is seen.
WHITE:  They are diluted pale and very,very creams, because the white Afghan  does not exist. That one that seems to us white at sight is very rare to see. The pigmentation color liver is very undesirable, may to be black, since it is not Afghan about layer a salt lake.
BRINGE: Most frequent they are bringe red, bringe blue and bringe cream. One is a afghan that on a slight basic color, appears to him darker rays, being able to be these more or less ample. To this we mainly observed it color better where the hair is short in the afghan, in the chair.
BRINGE BLACK &TAN : If the rays are very ample, they can get to us to seem of black color when they reach its maturity. It is a very interesting color for the loving understood ones and in the genetics of the afghan.
DOMINO: This it is the par excellence more exotic color. It is a very showy color of 2 tones, a pale cream to white and spots of very dark color on topknot. The distribution of the color must to a genetic mutation of the black tan. The black color fire follows the landlord by all the body and legs, appearing sometimes, palely on the lower abdomen. The color domino tends to desaperecer if it is crossed other colors and then they appear Afghan with different color in the face and chair. This happens frequently and thus we have the Black  domino, Blue  domino, Red domino and cream  domino.
SABER: It is a color very little frequent to see due to the length of the coat and less in the Afghan adult, yes it usually we see in some puppies. One is a black color with diluted ring in the tail and the extremities.
